Automatic/Revisited is a series of installations exploring of the physical creation and philosophical implications of experimental systems of unit-based construction. Automatic deconstructs and reconstructs a system of concrete units used by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright in a series of 1950s single-family homes. Revisited reinterprets Wright’s forms and intentions in a contemporary context, adapting a computer algorithm towards new system of concrete units that feature improved creative freedom and environmental performance over Wright’s original conception. Installed together, the systems create dialogue between two progressive ideas in architecture, past and future.
Automatic/Revisited was a collaborative project with designer Luke Stern. It was funded in part by the Howarth-Wright Fellowship, and was published in Synthetic Digital Ecologies.
